Does the availability of NARCAN encourage drug use?
Reversing an opioid overdose using NARCAN gives a patient a second chance at life. Following a successful overdose reversal, a patient can access additional treatment options that he or she may not have considered previously.
Can NARCAN be self-administered?
During a drug overdose, an opioid user will not have the ability to administer NARCAN for themselves. Fortunately, it is very easy for a friend or family member to administer the drug.
Is NARCAN difficult to obtain?
Thanks to changes in the law in many states, including Louisiana, NARCAN is available in most major pharmacies and can be purchased without a prescription. This includes CVS, Walgreen’s, and Rite Aid. Most insurance plans cover NARCAN and many community-based organizations or public health programs provide the drug for free.
How long does it take to work?
Most patients respond in 2 to 3 minutes. Additional doses of NARCAN Nasal Spray can be given if the patient is not adequately responding or responds and relapses.
What happens if it is used by someone not experiencing an overdose?
The medicine in NARCAN® Nasal Spray has no effect in people who are not taking opioid medicines
