Introduction

Welcome to the Cultural Districts of St. Tammany Parish.  The State of Louisiana has officially designated six areas in St. Tammany Parish as "Cultural Districts".  Each designated area markets original, locally produced artwork tax free to the public.  Look for the State of Louisiana "Cultural Districts" sign on local businesses to see where tax free local art may be purchased.  Many festivals and events held annually (or more often) take place in these Cultural Districts.

We have a rich cultural heritage, and love to share our creativity with the rest of the world.  Come discover all that St. Tammany has to offer.  From one end of the parish to the other, our artists of all types are building excellence every day.  Stop by and browse a while.  We're glad you're here.

Every event in St. Tammany Parish contributes to the cultural brew.

The Fontainebleau Cultural District in Lacombe is intertwined with Bayou Lacombe in every way.  The local artists use the bayou as a source of inspiration for their work.  The area is steeped in wildlife, as evidenced by its proximity to the Big Branch National Wildlife Refuge.  Unspoiled Lake Pontchartrain shoreline and accessible Louisiana bayou host the annual Lacombe Crab Festival.  The Fontainebleau Cultural District anchors St. Tammany Parish to its roots in the environment.

Covington presents a unique flavor all its own.  A distinctly urban downtown with small town flair is what invites visitors to stroll the sidewalks of the Covington Cultural District.  Galleries, restaurants and unexpected shops line the blocks of the downtown area.  From the Three Rivers Arts Festival to a unique Bastille Day celebration, the Covington Cultural District offers a varied collection of opportunities for the visitor.  The historic buildings lining the streets invite one to visit and sample the cultural offerings found throughout the district.

The quiet sounds of the Tchefuncte River beckon.  The horizon is dotted with masts lined up at the docks.  The Madisonville Cultural District hosts the annual Wooden Boat Festival and the monthly Riverfront Art Market.  The small town charm of this beautifully situated area invites people from all walks of life to appreciate the natural scenery of the Tchefuncte.  Historically significant to southern Louisiana, Madisonville and the Tchefuncte River join art and nature in a most inviting fashion.

The breeze off Lake Pontchartrain creates a perfect backdrop for the live oaks and historic architecture of the Mandeville Lakefront.  Stroll down sidewalks in front of galleries and restaurants.  Stop and enjoy a coffee while watching the lake.  Enjoy the annual Greater Mandeville Seafood Festival at nearby Fontainebleau State Park.  The Old Mandeville Cultural District embodies all that this historic area has to offer.  From stage to visual arts to culinary enjoyment, the charm of the lakefront spills over into every aspect of Old Mandeville.

Most visitors to the Midtown Cultural District of Abita Springs are surprised by this hidden gem.  The quaint, hometown feel created by the town center invites visitors to the monthly Abita Trailhead Marketplace.  Visits to the UCM Museum and the Abita Springs Opry are two of the regular events which mold the eclectic blend which is the one of a kind personality of Abita Springs.  The warmth of the people creates an atmosphere of home and fun at the Midtown Cultural District of Abita Springs.

Revitalization is the theme for the City of Slidell Olde Towne Cultural District.  After much of Slidell was devastated by Hurricane Katrina, Olde Towne has been reborn into a diverse and culturally rich area of St. Tammany Parish’s largest city.  Hosting events such as the Slidell Spring Street Fair and the Art at the Market, the Slidell area is a wonderful location for local artists to display their works in a variety of locations.  As this area continues to flourish, the City of Slidell Olde Towne Cultural District continues to expand its repertoire of cultural offerings to the public.
