Traditional Japanese Folk Dancing Lessons
5/5/12
St. Tammany Parish Library, Slidell branch, located at 555 Robert Blvd, is pleased to present Traditional Japanese Folk Dancing Lessons instructed by Mrs. Sugai Barker. The Japanese Consulate in New Orleans has recognized Mrs. Barker, Japanese folk dance teacher for many years, for her cultural contributions.
Participants will learn several types of traditional Japanese dance, all of them unique. Some describe historical events and others are traditionally performed entirely by men. The four traditional dances today are as follows: Kabuki, from the 17th century; Bon Odori, a dance for the spirits; Nihon Buyo, created from a bit of all the dances, and Noh Mai.
Mrs. Barker will offer four classes from 3-4:30 p.m. on the following Saturdays: February 4, March 3, April 14, and May 5.
The event is free and open to the public. Class size is limited to twenty adults or children accompanied by adults. To register, please call 985-646-6470.
