Celebrate National Train Day with the City of Slidell, LA! On May 12, 2012 from 11am.to 4pm, The Southern Economic Transit Authority (formerly Slidell Train Station Commission) will host its 2nd Annual National Train Day Celebration.

National Train Day's focus is to increase awareness and educate people about safety and the joys of passenger rail, as well as celebrate Amtrak's 41st birthday. See the 1913 train depot (now on the National Register of Historic Places) that Amtrak uses for its passenger trains. Two Amtrak locomotives, a sleeper car, and a coach car will be parked behind the depot for people to view (no train rides). We have a model train for kids to engineer, two kiddie trains depicting the Saints and LSU Tigers will be available for free rides, and antique model trains will be on display. Norfolk Southern Railway will have its Operation Lifesaver officials on hand to discuss train safety, and we will have display boards of our proposed project for an multi-modal transit facility for everyone to view. And you don't want to miss the newly painted murals in the Amtrak waiting area, along with the restored antique benches!

There are several door prizes provided by local businesses, and food will be provided by the Times Bar & Grill, also located in the depot. Amtrak is providing the birthday cake to celebrate their 41st year of operation. Amtrak officials will be on hand for the event, as well as officials from Norfolk Southern Railway. The Mayor Freddy Drennan and City Council members will be in attendance, as well as St. Tammany Parish and State officials. Join us and railroad enthusiasts of all ages for a fun-filled day of excitement and education about passenger rail! ALL ABOARD!
