Summary: The Diesel Mechanic is under the direction of the Supervisor 1 – Mechanic Shop. The Diesel Mechanic is responsible for job set up and the supervision of others assigned to task and will substitute/fill in for other positions as needed. The DM operates a variety of diagnostic instruments and a variety of hand, electric, and air driven tools. Services, repairs, and or rebuilds brakes, engines, electrical, fuel, hydraulic, transmissions, ignition, air, exhaust, axle assemblies and all related systems.

- Work on parish equipment to repair and maintain
- Order parts for repairs and maintenance
- Keep work areas clean and safe
- Assist other mechanics
- File invoices, do parts room paper work and documentation, receive and distribute ordered parts
- Perform mechanical repairs on light trucks and heavy equipment
- Responsible to operate 35-ton lowboy truck and trailer
- Responsible to prepare requisitions and maintain records associated
- Responsible to safely operate parish owned tow truck
- Brake tag inspections
- Any other duties as assigned
Competencies: Must have knowledge of repairing heavy equipment and the ability to keep up with the changing technology of equipment; experience with mechanic tools, ability to comprehend shop manuals and knowledge of basic computer skills and diagnostic programs. Employee must have knowledge and ability to be trained to operate any piece of parish equipment.
Work Environment: The incumbent typically performs work in a maintenance shop and in the field. The field includes high traffic areas, open and empty land, wooded conditions, both urban and rural roads and drainage, muddy areas, swampy areas, hot, humid, cold, and wet conditions, and exposure to wildlife and insects. This position may include work performed in an office environment to complete necessary documents pertaining to the job.
Physical Demands: Heavy work. Heavy work involves lifting no more than 100 pounds at a time with frequent lifting, lowering, pulling, pushing and carrying of objects weighing up to 50 pounds. Must be able to bend, stoop, kneel and climb in order to complete various job duties. Must be able to stand, sit and walk for extended periods, sometimes on uneven or rough terrain in various weather conditions. If someone can do heavy work, we determine that he or she can also do medium, light, and sedentary work.
Required Education/Qualifications: A high school diploma or equivalent GED and some specialized training in diesel mechanics, maintenance management, or a closely related field required; or in lieu of the above, three years’ experience in a recognized heavy equipment repair facility. Applicant must possess a valid Class “A” CDL with airbrake and combination vehicles endorsements or be able to obtain CDL within 3 months of hire.

Salary: $16.33 - $18.04 / Hour
