St. Tammany Parish Government has been receiving numerous calls and inquiries about removing Hurricane Isaac debris from private subdivisions.
Private subdivisions are, by definition, private property. There are no public roads or rights-of-way in a private subdivision and government can only remove debris from public property. The use of public equipment, or expenditure of public funds, on private property is strictly prohibited.
“St. Tammany Parish has requested that FEMA authorize the parish to remove debris from private subdivisions,” said Bill Oiler, St. Tammany Parish Chief Administrative Officer. “However, as more time passes without approval, the less likely the parish is to receive it. Given the likelihood of receiving a negative response from FEMA, and the number of citizens anxious to get debris removed, residents in private subdivisions may want to consider alternatives for debris removal.”
Residents in private subdivisions are encouraged to contact their Homeowner’s Association to discuss debris removal within their subdivisions.
