FEMA Preliminary Flood Maps, Deadline to Appeal: January 22, 2008
(12-01-2008)

FEMA Preliminary Flood Maps
Deadline to Appeal: January 22, 2008

As two separate deadlines have been published for residents of St. Tammany Parish to appeal FEMA’s new preliminary flood maps, St. Tammany is requesting that all appeals be in parish offices no later than January 21, 2009 so that the parish may submit all appeals on January 22, 2009.

The information website, http://www.lamappingproject.com/, lists January 29 as the appeal deadline. However, correspondence with FEMA may be interpreted to mean that January 22nd is the official deadline.

“Because there may be some discrepancy, the parish legal staff is recommending that we file by January 22nd to ensure that our citizens are fully protected,” said Parish President Kevin Davis. “The question comes in determining actual publication and notification dates on the part of FEMA. We want to be safe.”

The Parish is hosting a third Open House for the public to view the new preliminary flood maps for St. Tammany Parish on Tuesday, December 16, from 12 to 6 pm. The Open House will take place at the Slidell office of the St. Tammany Parish Permits Department, located at 61134 Military Road.

Representatives from FEMA as well as the St. Tammany Parish Department of Permits will be on hand to answer any questions regarding the flood maps. The hours are designed to accommodate a variety of working hours for the public. The maps are the preliminary maps released by FEMA, and affect several areas within St. Tammany Parish.

Both groups of representatives will be able to help the public in locating and viewing how potential changes in the zones would affect their residences. For more information regarding the open house, please call the St. Tammany Parish Permits Office at (985) 898-2574.
