St. Tammany Parish Animal Shelter Updates
St. Tammany Parish Animal Shelter Rehomes 46 Greyhounds Removed from Pearl River Area Rescue
The 46 pups removed from a Pearl River rescue in early November by St. Tammany Parish Animal Control officers, have been rehomed. Acting on a report and subsequent photos, Animal Control Officers, accompanied by the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office, visited A Grey Area Greyhound Adoption Inc. near Pearl River. The conditions in the facility warranted the seizure of the pups, most of them Greyhounds. Eleven of the pups were returned to their owners, and the remaining 35 were taken in by rescue groups.
“I am very proud of the work by our Department of Animal Services team. They quickly assessed all of the pups — and placed them with their rightful owners, or with reputable rescue groups who so generously offered to help,” said Mike Cooper, St. Tammany Parish President. “Our shelter population is such that this sudden influx of pups was easily managed, and I attribute this to the hard work of our staff under the proactive leadership of our Director, Beth Brewster.”
“Our focus is safety of the public, and the well-being of the animals in our care. There are occasions, like this one, where we step in to lend a hand,” said Beth Brewster, Director of the St. Tammany Parish Department of Animal Services. “We want to encourage citizens to call us if they are in a situation that they find unmanageable, or if they see something they feel needs our attention. We are here to help.”
Several reputable rescue groups worked closely with the St. Tammany Parish Department of Animal Services to pull 35 pups. These groups are: GPOA- Greyhound Pets of America, National Borzoi Rescue Foundation, Afghan Club of America, STOLA National Saluki Rescue, and Whippet Rescue and Placement.
